Job Description
You will work as a Senior Linux engineer as part of the Technology Operations team, who work with cutting-edge technologies and large installations to re-define the world of search. Refining and building infrastructure for a technology based company; you will be hands-on in your approach to problem solving and be a jack of all trades. You will get to wear all different hats including Sysadmin, Analyst, Architect, and Tools developer. An ideal candidate will be responsible for designing and implementing solutions, project management and participate in 24/7 support of critical systems.
You will:
- Be responsible for designing and maintaining reliable, scalable, secure and high availability Linux systems.
- Work closely with teams of Engineers, QA and Technical operations in a fast-paced dynamic development environment.
- Develop and maintain documentation related to design, installation, administration and maintenance of multiple Linux systems in a distributed computing environment.
- Be responsible for automating system deployments, management and monitoring in various colo and cloud computing environments.
- Lead implementation and operation of an elegant distributed high-performance computing infrastructure. (500+ Nodes).
- Enhance backup tools and monitoring.
- Participate in disaster recovery and monthly recovery tests.
- Work with project managers and technical staff in defining and documenting technical project requirements and deadlines.
- Participate in weekly on call rotation, and weekly sprints.
- Work independently and manage project deadlines.
- Mentor other team members and assist with office infrastructure.
You should:
- Be an expert in Linux engineering related subject matter.
- Be able to work independently and complete system upgrades, maintenance, deployments and enhancement projects.
- Have excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate with tech and non-tech team members equally.
- Be able to prioritize workload in a dynamic and challenging work environment
- Proven project management and estimation experience.
- Have built/automated scalable systems handling large amounts of data.
- Be comfortable with distributed computing architectures and industry best security practices.
- Be familiar with Linux desktop environments and Windows integration.
- Ability to troubleshoot a wide array of system, networking, and software configuration problems.
- Drive the implementation of systems administration best practices.
- Be service-minded; able to help and ability to deal well with pressure
You must:
- RHEL/Centos, Ubuntu, OS X, Windows a plus.
- Strong experience in at least one of the industry standard databases:
Mysql, PostgreSQL replication, Tuning and high availability. - Strong understanding of IP Networks, Firewalls and security, DNS, TCP/IP, DHCP, Perl/Python and bash scripting.
- Systems automation and deployment tools:
CFEngine/Puppet, KickStart/PXE - Monitoring tools:
Nagios, Zenoss, Sitescope, Cacti, RRD, SNMP, openNMS - Experience with:
Apache, Tomcat, HAProxy, Load balancing, Squid, VMware ESX/Xen, PHP, JAVA, Samba - Systems authentication concepts with LDAP, RADIUS and MS Active Directory
- Working knowledge of Internet Protocols:
SMTP, POP3, IMAP, FTP, SSH, DNS, HTTP, HTTPS, NFS. - Understanding of VPN technologies and asterisk phone systems.
- Understanding of storage principles in high performance environment (RAID, file systems, etc)
- Linux performance tuning and debugging tools.
- Network sniffers.
You're even cooler if you:
- Are comfortable with Hadoop, and Map Reduce Environments.
- Have exposure to Amazon ec2 or other cloud computing environments.
- Have experience building systems for search technology.
