Adam Dince is currently acting on behalf of Deluxe Corporation as Head of Natural Search Optimization I’ve always been a bit of a tech geek. When I joined the Navy at 19, I simultaneously started an IT consulting business on the side. I’d regularly make house calls to local Coronado, California homes and help set up computers, teach people how to use software, and fix broken hardware. After my Navy days, I enrolled in college and got bit by the Web design bug. This led to my IT business morphing into a Web design company. I loved working with the many small businesses that enlisted my services, but eventually, sitting behind a computer and coding all day became too monotonous for … Continue reading
Adam Dince is currently the VP, Director of Search and Content Strategy for MRM Worldwide, a top-five global digital and direct agency. One thing that search marketers and savvy Webmasters know for sure is that search engine algorithms change on a regular basis. According to Google, they roll out more than 500 algorithm changes per year. While most of these changes are minor, every few months, Google rolls out a “major” algorithmic update that affects search results in significant ways. (Check out this neat video to find out more about how Google decides what goes into each update). While most major algorithm changes get publicity because of the negative effects that follow it, many sites benefit from an update. If … Continue reading
Late last year, Google launched its authorship program and began displaying author information in the search results to “help users discover great content.” For author information to appear in the SERPs as shown below, websites must implement the rel=author tag and link to the author’s Google+ account in the tag. Build a Sample of Top Tech Blogs With several months passed since the debut of rel=author in the SERPs, in July 2012, we gathered the top 250 tech blogs from blog network Technorati and checked to see if they had implemented the ‘rel=author’ tag. The list included top drawing blogs such as Mashable, Techcrunch, Gizmodo and The Verge, and also more niche players such as GottaBeMobile, Nikon Rumors and Chrome … Continue reading
The sophistication with which companies analyze their natural search visibility and the metrics they use to do so can vary widely up and down the spectrum. There is often little correlation between how sophisticated a company is in other areas of their online business and their level of sophistication when it comes to their natural search metrics. There are, however, definite benefits to becoming more savvy in how you look at your natural search programs. Visibility trends can inform strategy, competitive insight can impact a tactical approach, and gradual increases in your sophistication can start you down a road of looking at your SEO from a holistic perspective rather than a limited one-off view. If you’ve been considering becoming more … Continue reading
In last month’s article we were reminded about the significance of anchor text in links for natural search ranking. We pointed out that even with the ongoing changes taking place in the SERPs, SEOs still rate anchor text as the most important of all ranking factors. In the article we analyzed more than 4.2 million external links from 650+ domains in Searchlight, Conductor’s enterprise SEO platform, to understand more about how external links flow to websites. While the significance of external links in ranking is well known, it may be less well-known that internal anchor text—links coming from your own domain pointing to pages within your own domain—can significantly impact search visibility. Given the important but less-talked-about significance of internal … Continue reading
Today Google announced the release of Your World, which adds more personalization and social filtering on your search results. Google has also made it easier to manage the level and depth of your personalization with Your World as well for those who prefer unfiltered results. Adding social signals to search engine result pages is nothing new. Bing has been doing this long before Google. With 2011 showing many months of lost market share to Bing, it is no surprise that they have identified a business need here. Check out this quick marketing video on the new functionality then read more to understand how this will impact the user and the search marketer. Here are some of the new functionality that … Continue reading
