With the speed that things change in the SEO industry, one year is like seven dog years in other industries.  As the end of a year rapidly approaches, year-end retrospectives that examine the changes from many different angles abound —from changes in how SEO is perceived in the organization to how the practice of SEO is changing in light of 2012’s algo changes. Today Google announced the release of Your World, which adds more personalization and social filtering on your search results.  Google has also made it easier to manage the level and depth of your personalization with Your World as well for those who prefer unfiltered results. Adding social signals to search engine result pages is nothing new. Last week we published a first look at Google’s Farmer/Panda update to see what effect it had on content farms. In Conductor Searchlight, our SEO platform, we analyzed more than 2,000 top ranking keywords for content farmer ehow and found an increase in volatility after the algorithm change, with 36% of keywords showing rank movement. Conductor Searchlight: We analyzed the same keyword set this week and found volatility had actually increased to 43%: Amazingly we are actually approaching the point where half of all keywords are shifting position from one week to the next.  We’ll keep an eye on this trend going forward. On February 24th Google announced an algorithm update designed to “find more high-quality sites in search”: Our goal is simple: to give people the most relevant answers to their queries as quickly as possible. Bing Now Powering Yahoo: A data driven view into what has changed The search community was buzzing last week with the release of Google Instant – but a potential bigger change occurred the previous week as Microsoft and Yahoo finished up the transition to Bing officially powering Yahoo’s search results (in the US and Canada). Microsoft negotiated a ten year exclusive on Yahoo’s search technology so it may one day see the light of day again in one form or another, but for now it appears to be locked away in Steve Ballmer’s safe.
