Recently promoted to team manager, Maria Bradley says that her new title still doesn’t describe what she does at Conductor, a 5-year-old search engine optimization technology company. “It’s very collaborative here,” said Ms. Bradley, who joined the firm two years ago as strategic account director. “I do a lot of things that don’t necessarily fall into my role.”

That cooperative spirit among employees is fostered by an open floor plan, a dress code so casual workers wear shorts in the summer, weekly all-company gatherings—and the ringing of a giant gong whenever a deal is closed. The aim, said CEO and co-founder Seth Besmertnik, is “a culture where people feel part of something that’s more than a job.”
