In 2008, as the economy was sinking, management at Marcum came to an unavoidable conclusion: It needed to freeze pay and eliminate bonuses. The accounting profession was reeling from a shrinking workload, with clients bringing their growth plans to a screeching stop or, in the most severe cases, going bust. The upshot was that many accountants were out on the street, looking for jobs.
