The Best U.S. Cities and Countries for SEO Careers

Which city and country ranks #1 for inbound marketing jobs?

Recently, we conducted research around the number of inbound marketing job listings throughout the U.S. and wanted to know: which city holds the most opportunities for inbound marketers?

With data from both Indeed and Payscale, we gathered over 3,600 job listings for 7 prevalent titles in the digital marketing industry: Director of Marketing, SEO/Marketing Manager, Account Manager, SEO Analyst/Strategist, SEO Specialist, SEO Coordinator/Associate, and new this year: the Content Marketing Specialist. We also compared average job salary data for Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia.

So, which city and country is in highest demand for inbound marketing jobs and how does this data compare to 2015’s research study?

New York and San Francisco are the Top 2 Cities for Inbound Marketing Jobs

New York City and San Francisco are in the two spots for the highest number of jobs in the U.S. and also happen to be the two more expensive cities in America (coincidence?). In sheer volume, New York wins over San Francisco in a landslide, with more than 2x more jobs listings than San Francisco has.

The 5 Top Cities for SEO Jobs Shift

New York and San Francisco are again the top two cities for number of SEO jobs (and has been since 2012). Chicago holds steady at 3rd from last year. Los Angeles takes a leap from 7th to 4th, and Atlanta from 10th to 5th.

The SEO demand in Los Angeles (+52%) and Atlanta (+41%) increased significantly since 2015, causing them to rise in the rankings and sit in the top 5 cities.

Both San Diego and Washington, DC – who were originally not in the top 10 in 2015 — made its way to the top 10 in 2016.

SEO Salary Comparisons Between English-Speaking Countries

For the first time, our salary study has included other countries besides the U.S.: Australia, Canada, and the UK.

Between these countries, Australia has the highest average SEO-related salary, beating out the US by over 6K (USD). The data included for this comparison only includes strictly SEO careers that were evaluated.
