The online commerce landscape has changed dramatically since shopping on the internet first began gaining traction in the mid to late 1990’s. Early adopter e-commerce companies founded on technology enjoyed a head-start over traditional brick and mortars who were slow to respond to consumer spending shifting online. Initially, some tried to solve the problem by simply throwing money at it; as recently as 2009, some brick and mortars were still spending up to nearly $300,000 per day on paid search. The last 12-18 months have seen traditional brick and mortar companies step up their game when it comes to online commerce. Not long ago, Rand Fishkin mused about the possibility of a long-tail to the web’s referral traffic (Is There a Long Tail to Referral Traffic?). He theorized: …that only ~20% of the referrals that the average website receives comes from the tail of the distribution curve, whilst Matt felt that number should be considerably larger. Rand’s analysis of several domains (broken out separately below because the number of sites used for the two groups differed) showed that the top 10 referring domains (between .33% and 1.47% of the total domains driving traffic) drove between 65% and 88% of all referral traffic. Interestingly, this percentage was significantly lower (37%) when looking at SEOmoz.org, presumably because it has been around longer and … Continue reading
Note: This research was covered by Pandodaily on October 25th, 2012. Presidential Election Now Decided Online As we continue to move toward Election Day on November 6th and we contemplate the factors that will influence the outcome of the Presidential election, we are reminded that what happens online is increasingly crucial in influencing public opinion. In fact, Wired Magazine went so far as to declare that it was the internet that elected Barack Obama in 2008 (Propelled by Internet, Barack Obama Wins Presidency). Clearly, controlling internet messaging, breadth of online reach, and galvanizing online voters has become a new language in the electoral process. Romney Making Significantly Bigger Push Online than Obama An analysis of the online strategies of the … Continue reading
Jump right into the research: Download the full research report, “Why 2013 Will be the Year of the SEO“. When economists seek to take a measure of the large and complex entity that is the economy, they measure several economic indicators such as housing starts, jobs created, and gross domestic product. Taken together, these distinct indicators provide a comprehensive picture of how this large, complicated entity—the economy—is performing. This same collective principle can be applied to the SEO industry to get a measure of its performance and growth. RFP’s from companies for an Enterprise SEO Platform have increased, internal search teams have grown across all verticals, and executives have become increasingly fluent in the language of search. While we have … Continue reading
Any hint of an ‘Apple’ product these days garners its fair share of coverage, but even by Apple standards, in the lead-up to the September 12th launch event the coverage was fast and furious online. Rumors and speculation about what Apple might launch, from a larger iPhone to a mini-iPad flew thru the Blogosphere while supposed leaks of the new phone were covered far and wide. To get a sense of which tech blogs won the digital media coverage war, we tracked 71 high-volume search terms readers might use to search for Apple coverage. Half the terms were keywords searchers might use to search for iPhone coverage (e.g. ‘iPhone 5’, ‘iPhone rumors’…) and half were iPad keywords (e.g. ‘newest iPad’, … Continue reading
