SGE (Search Generative Experience)
SGE is Google’s experimental AI-powered search feature that displayed generative summaries above traditional results, which evolved into AIO.
What is SGE?
Search Generative Experience (SGE) was the original name of Google's experimental AI-powered search feature that displayed generative AI-created summaries above traditional search results. SGE aggregated and synthesized information from multiple sources to provide conversational answers with attributable citations, appearing directly on the search results page for users who opted into Google Search Labs.
SGE introduced several key features:
- AI-generated summaries appearing above traditional search results
- Conversational answers synthesized from multiple sources with attributable citations
- Opt-in availability through Google Search Labs
- Integration of large language models into search results
SGE evolved into AI Overviews (AIO), which rolled out more broadly as Google's production-ready AI search experience, fundamentally changing how results are displayed and how brands optimize for visibility in AI-generated answers and AI mode.
