Pat's August 30|30 showed that AI referral traffic is still tiny, holding at just 0.83% of sessions and concentrated in a few industries like Consumer Staples, with YouTube dominating citations over branded sites. His EdTech, Home Builders, and Senior Living deep dives all shared one pattern: traditional page-one visibility got hit hard by the March core update, while AI Overview visibility kept climbing regardless.
He then covered three news stories: Claude's new EU-mandated watermarking, which he called already broken since edits, translation, or paraphrasing wipe it out; Cloudflare's new AI-visibility dashboard, useful but shallow and no substitute for a real platform; and nearly 300 French newspapers suing Google over AI Overviews cutting their traffic, which Pat predicted will spread to other markets.
He tied it together by noting Google is expanding AI Overviews worldwide (showing up over half the time by his estimate), driving both the industry shifts and the publisher backlash — closing with his usual reminder that great content for actual customers beats chasing algorithms.
