Pat’s September 30-30 highlighted continued volatility across search and AI visibility. Traditional search was generally up in Trade & Vocational Education and B2B SaaS, with examples including Lincoln Tech (+41%), Salesforce (+35%), and Monday.com (+77%), while Health & Wellness and Beauty saw more declines. AI Overview visibility remained particularly “choppy” and inconsistent.

He also covered Google’s URLs, which make SERP scraping more difficult, and warned that rankings beyond the top 30 may no longer be reliable. Pat discussed Google testing text ads within AI Mode, but questioned whether users will click them, noting AI referrals typically account for only 1–2% of traffic.

The final major takeaway was the rapid shift from People Also Ask to AI Overviews, with one study showing 97% of PAA results answered by AI in early September. Pat sees this as part of Google’s broader move away from the traditional “10 blue links” toward an interactive, AI-driven search experience.
